Lasix (Furosemid) is a medication with a pronounced diuretic effect.

Lasix blocks the reabsorption of sodium and chlorine ions in the Henle loop, therefore helps the body to rid of extra water and salt. It also increases the excretion of potassium, calcium, and magnesium. When taken orally the onset of the diuretic effect is observed within 1 hour, the maximum effect is after 1-2 hours, and the effect lasts up to 6 or 8 hours.

When Lasix is prescribed?

Lasix is used to decrease shortness of breath, edema (swelling) of the limbs and stomach. It is often used to treat high blood pressure and edema syndrome of various origins. Lowering high blood pressure helps with stroke and heart attack prevention, as well as protects from kidney diseases.

The dosage

The dosage of Lasix is calculated considering the age, weight, health condition and individual treatment response.

Patients with increased blood pressure are normally prescribed from a dosage of 20 to 80 mg of Lasix per day. For heart failure and edema the dosage might be 20 to 120 my per day.

Do not increase the prescribed dosage.
